Out in support of her latest solo album, “Forever Warriors / Forever United”, Doro Pesch was joined by Warlock guitarist Tommy Bolan and Chris Caffery (TSO/Savatage), long time bassist Nick Douglas, with a sub on drums for Johnny Dee on paternity leave. After over 30 years of playing true heavy metal, the Metal Queen still has that youthful exuberance and smile on her face. The setlist was as usual chock full of classics from her Warlock days and albums “Burning the Witches” (1984), “Hellbound” (1985), and “Triumph and Agony” (1987) where the hit ‘All We Are’ is from. Sprinkled in a couple newer solo tunes, and Mike Howe from Metal Church joining her for a cover of the Priest classic ‘Breaking the Law’.
Metal Church, also supporting a new album, “Damned If You Do”, their lineup today is original guitarist Kurdt Vanderhoof, with Rick Van Zandt (2008 -), Mike Howe back on vocals for album number two, Steve Unger returns on bass, and Stet Howland (ex- W.A.S.P.) on drums. Playing three off the new album ‘By the Numbers’, ‘Damned If You Do’, ‘The Black Things’, one from “XI”, classics ‘Badlands’, ‘Fake Healer’, and ‘Date with Poverty’, confidence is in the Howe era. Even two from “Hanging in the Balance, which is like the black sheep of the family, – ‘Gods of Second Chance’ and ‘No Friend of Mine’. The downside, nothing from the four albums Ronny Munroe sang on, and only three from the first two albums (‘Start the Fire’, ‘Watch the Children Pray’, and ‘Beyond the Black’) is the real crime. Outside of that, the band was tight, heavy as a ton of bricks (yes, pun intended, wish they’d play it), and Howe still has his vocals and tone.
Nice attendance for a heavy metal show at a venue split into a concert hall, and bowling alley? For the up and coming Asbury Park boardwalk and surrounding shops, restaurants, the famous Stone Pony, Asbury Lanes adds to the entertainment.
