Vicious Rumors were one of those bands like Malice, Helstar, Agent Steel, Omen, speed metallers mixed with traditional Maiden/Priest metal moments, of course. Never graduating into a household name, or arena headliners, but none the less known and recognized amongst the metal community. The band today is lone original member Geoff Thorpe on guitar, joined by Larry Howe on drums (1985–2000, 2005–),Gunnar DüGrey on second guitar , singer Nick Courtney, with Cody Green on bass.
Last year VR celebrated the anniversary of 1988’s “ Digital Dictator” album playing it in its entirety, tonight including four from it – title track, ‘Minute to Kill’, ‘Worlds and Machines’, and ‘The Crest’. Not only known for their tight musical precision, balance between melody and heavy riffs, it was equally the voice of singer Carl Albert who passed away in 1995 and appeared on the classic albums “Digital Dictator”, Vicious Rumors in 1990, and 1991’s “Welcome to the Ball”. With a similar tone to Albert, new guy Nick Courtney does a great job with the Rumors back catalogue, as does the rest of the band. The entire setlist pulled from those 80s albums, hitting on gems like ‘ Abandoned’, ‘Down to the Temple’, ‘Hellraiser’, ‘Soldiers of the Night’, and MTV video track ‘Don't Wait for Me’.
For a Thursday night at a local club the numbers could have been better, but the diehards in 80s metal shirts and denim jackets decorated with patches showed the underground names still matter.
