Making the best out of the circumstances this 2020 Covid-19 year, like many other bands, pro wrestling star Chris Jericho and his band Fozzy went virtual for a live in studio performance. Titled “Capturing Judas”, with long time guitarist Rich Ward, and Billy Grey also on guitar, Frank Fontsere (drums), with Trixter’s PJ Farley on bass. The pre-show event was a 30-minute documentary of behind the scenes access to the band on the road. The special world premiere of Fozzy Across America, filmed October 13, 2017, the day Fozzy celebrated the release of “Judas” by performing 3 shows, in 3 different time zones, on the same day.
Like his wrestling shtick Jericho’s rock n roll charisma is as electric, Chris is equally a lover of wrestling and metal music, evident by his performances in both arenas of entertainment, as well as his knowledge. In 2020 celebrating 20 years of making music, Fozzy has released seven studio albums to date. Now while Jericho loves all things classic hard rock and heavy metal from the 70s and 80s, his band Fozzy are influenced and have the musical direction of the modern sounds from America post late 90s. Bands like Pop Evil, FFDP, Halestorm, Godsmack, Sevendust, Sixx AM, and Shinedown, rhythmic groove driven hard rock, sometimes the metal moments of Alter Bridge, with a sing-able chorus. See ‘Drinkin With Jesus’, ‘Burn Me Out’, ‘Nowhere To Run’, and ‘Elevator’. ‘Lights Go Out’ has a Alice in Chains type-ish grunge riff, while ‘Wolves At Bay’ the heaviest of the bunch with an aggressive riff, and ‘Enemy’ a moody ballad type in the verse with Chris showing his melodic mid-range tone. Hit single ‘Judas’ closed out the set in the encore.
As far as this whole virtual live format, in the studio, it works, and I like how they put the song title as it began. Until live shows start happening again support the bands you like this way for now. Got to keep live music alive somehow. Good camera work going back and forth between members, and Chris’ commentary, a little storytelling, after each song was enjoyable.
Musically not my thing at all, but for fans of the American sounds of mainstream rock radio songs Fozzy are for you.
