Children of Bodom – Hate Crew Deathroll

Label: Century Media
Format: CD
Released: 2003
Reviewed By: Rich Catino

Working within the realm of melodic death metal, Children usually have a pretty standard format as far as song structure adding in their own touch with the neoclassical keybaords and guitar leads. Even though the arrangements can be similar at times all don’t have the same feel and very little do they seem as if they are repeating themselves. Here, there is a little flavor a modern sounds like on “Sixpounder”

Trademark Stratovarius style keyboards accompany the songs with equally talented guitar leads and solos. “Chokehold” has a nice groove and flow finding a medium between neither too fast nor too slow with some very cool riffing and both keyboard and guitar trade off of solos going on.

“Bodom Beach Terror” is another with great machine gun riffing. “Angels Don’t Cry” is one of their more melodious tracks moving at a mid range pace, though vocals are still monotone.

Alexi’s vocals are still very deathy and ruff. Songs could be much more powerful and catchy if all the vocals were not delivered all the time with the same abrasive sound to them. Really, these guys write some fantastic and catchy tunes and could benefit from a more varied vocal delivery.

Also included is a solid cover of ‘Silent Scream” by Slayer.
