Falconer – The Scepter of Deception

Label: Metal Blade
Format: CD
Released: 2003
Reviewed By: Rich Catino

This third release from Sweden’s Falconer has what many Power Metal listeners would be looking for. Fast, melodic rhythms and chorus’, and a tale that runs throughout about castles, swords and kings. The music is arranged with thought, though the vocals and harmonies are rather flat and don’t quite make an impression. The music suffers the same problem, not too exciting the way it is presented offering little for this over populated genre. Maybe I just find Falconer one of the lesser bands in Power Metal.

“Night of Infamy” has a nice rhythm change and guitar solo which caught my ear. “Hooves Over Northland” breaks things up with a slower pace and makes a better impression than the faster tunes. Still the chorus does not do it for me.

I find Falconer to have good qualities but lack consistency within their songs.
