Cannibal Corpse – The Wretched Spawn

Label: Metal Blade Records
Format: CD
Released: 2004

With the remake of the classic “Dawn of the Dead” movie just around the corner (March 2004), Cannibal Corpse release their latest corpse ridden bloodbath “The Wretched Spawn”.

Getting in the mood for a film like “Dawn”, with barking gut wrenching vocals by George “Corpsegrinder” Fisher and comic book styled artwork (and always very good) involving zombies and the consumption of body parts, Cannibal’s music goes just right with that film and its merciless nature. “Nothing Left to Mutilate”, “Blunt Force Castration”, Severed Head Stoning”, and my fav title “Rotted Body Landslide”, how can you go wrong for gory death metal, and these guys invented it!

The music has not really changed with pounding double bass drums and punishing guitars from Pat O’Brian and Jack Owen inside of brutally delivered arrangements they leave no room to come up for air once covered in the audible pile of body parts. Time and tempos change and do vary keeping things interesting with the occasional guitar solo, though one not into a constant barrage of punishment this well be hard to digest (no pun intended).

Another solid performance within the world they have created for themselves.
