Beyond the Embrace – Insect Song

Label: Metal Blade
Format: CD
Released: 2004
Reviewed By: Rich Catino

Beyond the Embrace have an impressive resume backing this third release. They have already toured with Opeth, Kataklysm, and big boys Helloween, currently out with Iced Earth. They create modern arrangements, similar to In Flames, with heavy riffing and melodic leads, fronted by an aggressive vocal style. A chorus can be found at times, but not the kind that becomes memorable.

Melody is used more as a contrast than as a hook. “My Fall” is more melodic seeing a place for a slower pacing and a less than hostile delivery. “Of Every Strain” utilizes segments of interesting guitar interplay and change in its riffing.

“Redeemer” is hard and fast with thrashy guitars, then dropping out to a slower piece breaking up the monotony, then again, it all comes right back hitting the listener over the head once again. ‘Ashes” offers something different as an acoustic piece, soft and peaceful.

Throughout Beyond the Embrace write within a modern day standard with traditional guitar leads and just may appeal and be a good starting point for someone not keen on or familiar with this sound of today.
