Derek Sherinian – Mythology

Derek Sherinian, former keyboard player for Dream Theater, shows his talent and versatility in his latest solo work “Mythology”.  Fans of Derek’s progressive past will get a little of that sound but not much.  Once again he works with only the best in the business as far as the musicians he collaborates with.

Here we get Zakk Wylde where on the lead off track “Day of the Dead” incorporates not only Zakk’s stylings but a little bit of the prog as well.   Billy Idol and former Vince Neil guitarist Steve Stevens adds some flash to his tracks.  “God of War” has both John Sykes (former Whitesnake, Blue Murder) and Zakk Wylde on guitars and Marco Mendoza (bass player for Ted Nugent, Whitesnake and Thin Lizzy), both guitar players bring their special tag on the song with John Sykes and his soulful tone shining.  A nice merging of the two to the darker song.  “El Flamingo Suave” is interesting, a jazz number, something you would hear on a Peanuts cartoon (you know, Snoopy and Charlie Brown).

The disc is all instrumental and not boring at all, the mix of musical styles and musicians makes for a varied and exciting listen.   Derek obviously is a talented writer and composer.
