Paths of Possession – Promises in Blood

Label: Metal Blade Records
Format: CD
Released: 2005
Reviewed By: Rich Catino

Paths of Possession features Death Metal alumni George Fisher of Cannibal Corpse on vocals and although no longer with the band, Richard Brunnelle once on guitar and who started the band in 1999. The music is based in many traditional extreme metal standards with thick crushing guitars, fast drumming and aggressive brutal vocals, but the amount of melodic elements out weighs the usual constant double bass blast beat filled Death Metal. The music contains many guitar leads and mid paced drums beats instead of the usual repetition the genre offers.

Fine examples of the bands talents in variety lies in the instrumental ‘Erzsebet’ followed by ‘Promises in Blood’ as both site influences from the Swedish Death Metal sound in the use of its leads but the vocals gives it that American Tampa Florida quality. I even hear some Obituary at certain moments in the songs. George’s vocals are also much more understood with this band as while still heavy and gut wrenching, each instrument is allowed some space within each song, along with tempo changes and dynamics created by the guitar solos this band may appeal to those who find say a Cannibal Corpse and Morbid Angel too repetitive, extreme, or one dimensional. Still it is Death Metal in nature but more melodic and varied than most.
