Dio – Holy Diver Live

Label: Eagle Vision
Format: DVD/CD
Released: 2006
Reviewed By: Rich Catino

This live recording was done for one special reason, to commemorate the release of Dio’s "Holy Diver" album from 1983. So the bulk of the show is "Holy Diver" performed in its entirety sandwiched between other selective tracks from singer Ronnie James Dio’s recording career. You get ‘Tarot Women’, ‘Gates of Babylon’, ‘Man on the Silver Mountain’ is a given, and ‘Long Live Rock n Roll’ from Rainbow, of course ‘Heaven and Hell’ from Sabbath along with ‘Sign of the Southern Cross’, and the rarely played Dio song ‘One Night in the City’.

The lineup for this show consists of current Dio members Rudy Sarzo on bass, Simon Wright on drums, Scott Warren on keyboards, and former Dio guitarist (just on the album "Killing the Dragon") Doug Aldrich. Interesting piece of trivia here….Doug was called in at the last minute to stand in for current guitarist Craig Goldy. Now I say "stand in" because oddly enough Doug is featured in the performance and for the backstage interviews, but in the booklet for the DVD/CD he is not pictured? Obviously he is no longer a member of Dio but could this have something to do with the fact he is currently a member of Whitesnake? Strange though he isn’t in photos regardless of the circumstances.

The players and execution of the songs are great of course, I mean look who we are talking about. From what I understand, unfortunately Mr. Ronnie Dio was feeling a bit under the weather, man does that suck getting sick on the night of a taping, but regardless that does not hinder his performance. He still belts out those songs with heart and passion for the music which continues to define the legend he is.

"We’ll know for the first time, if were evil or divine, we're the last in line".
