Heavenly – Virus

Label: Locomotive Records
Format: CD
Released: 2007

"Virus" is Heavenly’s fourth album and with so many out there playing this style of European metal its gotta be hard to stand out and get ahead of the pack. These Frenchmen use heavy doses of Gamma Ray and Stratovarius in their music making for a European style, fast rhythms with high spirited keyboards and vocals. Darker and little more aggressive than their first two with a zombie like character reaching out on the cover, Heavenly want to portray something different than the brighter colored sounds from many of their piers, this heard on ‘Dark Memories' and title track. For the title track the guitars are heavier at times yet the chorus’ are still very bright as hell. But I like the contrast between the aggressive riffs and melodic chorus for the title track, it works well. Boy….for 'The Power and the Fury' I can almost hear the chorus to Gamma Ray's 'Beyond the Black Hole', shame shame. Its good for what it is but the arrangement is such a rip off.

With Heavenly you will hear nothing original or inventive, yet something solid depending how you look at it (I think they are pretty decent), from second or third tier European Power Metal. I like their edge and energy and you can take into consideration imitation is considered the sincerest form of flattery. Isn’t it? So if this sound is your thing then you may want to check em out.
