Sinner – Crash and Burn

Label: Candlelight Records
Format: CD
Released: 2009

Rating: 7 / 10

Sinner is a band that I have found to spin out consistently good releases though those CD's never garner the rave reviews or the attention that Matt's other project, Primal Fear receive.

This album features a hard rock feel and a lot of the songs are heavy with an edge, but also featuring a bluesy rock and roll feel with an 80's mentality. The album is, in a way, similar to the early Sinner releases except with a more modern edge and production.

"Heartbreak Station" may be my favorite tune as it is very different and has a definite 80's pop metal flair to it, complete with female backing vocals and bluesy rock riffs.
Most of the album features upbeat, catchy hard rock numbers, but one ballad is featured on the CD in "Until it Hurts," which comes the closest to reminding of me late 90's era Sinner with more dark, melancholy melodies.

All in all, it's a solid albeit predictable work. There are a few filler tunes, but overall all the choruses are memorable and the CD is fun. Don't seek something groundbreaking or fully original, as Matt Sinner has never really been one to look at for anything that will redefine the genre. If you are already a Sinner fan, and prefer the older, more hard rock-type Sinner CD's, this may be one of your favorite. I'm a Sinner fan and I definitely appreciate this album for what it is: simple, straight-ahead, fun hard rock with hints of a more aggressive edge. Listen with an open mind and don't try to take it too seriously.
