Moonspell - Lusitanian Metal

A pair of DVDs and audio CD sheathed in a lavish, stylized and oversize hard cover book (28 pages of photos, silhouettes and commentary) comprises the deluxe edition. No longer on CM, the Portuguese warriors seek to update the historical archives, courtesy of nearly seven hours of material, stretching back to the blurry rehearsal tapes (’92, with just five piece drum kit) to ’05. Their live debut, in corpse-paint and spewing fiery plumbs is a historical document of just how far they’ve matured. Half of the audio portion is lifted from “Wolfheart”, the Century Media debut, and “Irreligious”, including killer live renditions of ‘Alma Mater’, ‘Mephisto’ and ‘Full Moon Madness’.

While the initial DVD houses a full concert (dozen songs from Poland, where else? 2004 Metalmania festival), all six Century era promo clips (sexy ‘Second Skin’ to violent ‘Everything Invaded’, which includes guest appearance by couple from the ‘Nocturna’ video) and 15-minute interview (conducted in an ornate Lisbon cemetery, lots of mausoleums and imagery), the piece de resistance is on DVD #2.

A 4 ½ hour retrospective that (by their own admission) stays away from the backstage foolishness, there’s footage from every year in the band’s existence (up to ’05, when they left for current home, SPV). That minimizes repeat selections, trying to add a few newbies each time, although ‘Vampira’ is here four times. The first 40 minutes or so are particularly rough, but show from the get-go that Moonspell were always concerned about visual presentation. Apart from Poland, it also hits non-typical locales like Turkey, Greece and Portugal (naturally).
