U.D.O. - The Best Of & Live

Label: ZYX
Format: CD
Released: 2009

BEWARE: Don’t be suckered in! I love the band/man, but this is nothing more than a former label’s cash grab and Herr Dirkschneider can’t be too pleased about it. Having moved on to AFM, these are essentially seven tunes from the double "Mastercutor Live" CD, hastily edited (songs are cut off abruptly, like the random mode on your home stereo, or with gaps, ala live MP3 downloads). Worse yet (at least for fans), these are the exact tracks (nothing new), with no pictures/liner notes/no CD tray card nor info, etc. Hell, there’s not even a full frontal face shot of Udo anywhere within the ill-conceived (money grubbing) package!

OK, these are some of the best Accept tracks (albeit also available live elsewhere), as well as a pair of U.D.O. songs (‘Animal House’ and ‘They Want War’: not necessarily the true ‘highlights’ of his solo career). As anyone who have seen either act knows, there’s plenty of audience sing alongs ("whoa, whoa") and/or rhythmic clapping. Here, they’re all left in, in their nearly nauseating entirety: ‘Princess Of The Dawn’, ‘Ball To The Wall’ and ‘Metal Heart’. With some tunes appearing prior to, or during the original concert’s encore, there’s even more “dead space” than the measly running time suggests. Only thing I can think is that this must one of those 5 Euro budget discs of which the Germans are so fond. If not, stay away.
