Leif Edling - Songs Of Torment, Songs Of Joy

Label: Candlelight
Format: CD
Released: 2009
Reviewed By: Mark Gromen
Rating: 7.5/10

The first real solo outing by longstanding Candlemass bassist, although some say the 90s releases by the Swedish doomsters were in fact solitary Edling efforts. Apart from those attending the BW&BK 6-Pack Weekend acoustic set (or possessing the Epicus demos), this marks the C-mass founder’s vocal debut, something closer to a voiceover than actual singing (think vintage Alice Cooper). Lots of majestic organ music and slow (naturally!) tempos. Not pure doom (as he has Candlemass for that), more of experimentation with creepy blackened atmospheres, minus the lyrics/voice. Only occasionally do the eight tracks rise above a crawl, especially ‘Nautilus’, the 70s synth inspired near-instrumental.
