“The Onslaught” was originally released by the band and only 1,000 copies were pressed and has since been completely re-mixed and re-mastered by James Murphy (former guitarist for Testament,Death,Obituary) . As opening track “Last Breath” kicked in I said to myself, “now this is how I want my THRASH!”. Music that’s fast and aggressive with attention to a classic thrash form and purpose, galloping rhythms and punchy changes at the core to “Revolution” and “Thou Shall Not Fear” (which feels like classic thrash but still contemporary in its ballsy production and harshness), and musically (not vocally) a sense of melody. Yes that’s right kiddies…MELODY (listen to the lead work in “Rebirth”). And you know what…these guys are as heavy as the next Lamb of God spinoff without those overally forced vocals. Abrasive vocals (think Paul Baloff from Exodus), yes, but I was happy to hear Lazarus don’t sound like I was being yelled at with road rage. As simple and straight forward as they are, accenting leads for “Damnation of the Weak” are killer!
Lazarus A.D. was the swift kick in the ass I needed in 09 after hearing many from the Lamb of God, Trivium, and Shadows Fall book of modern thrash. Bring on the follow up!
