Fairyland - Score To A New Beginning

Label: Napalm
Format: CD
Released: 2009
Reviewed By: Mark Gromen
Rating: 7.5/10

On the third platter from this symphonic/power metal brainchild of French keyboardist Phillipe Giordana vocals are handled predominately by Marco Sandron (Pathosray). His bandmates can be found elsewhere, as there are countless guests throughout the ten tracks, with almost a new guitarist for each. Heavenly string bender Olivier Lapauze adds a solo on the epic (8:59) title cut. Arranged as if it will eventually be performed as a play or be made into a film adaptation, including opening and closing credit “scenes”, the music is quick paced and neo-classical in scope.

The label makes comparisons to Rhapsody, yet more often the music is more reminiscent of the last pair of Symphony X discs (see ‘Across The Endless Sea Part II’), albeit synth driven (naturally, given Giordana’s instrumental choice). ‘Master Of The Waves’ is the most orchestral in nature, commencing with brass fanfares and strings, backed by female voices. The fairer sex’s vocals completely take over ‘Ending Credits’.
