Adagio – Archangels In Black

French metallers Adagio have released their 4th studio album, comprised of 9 tracks plus a video of the song ‘Fear Circus’. This is the first album featuring new vocalist Chris Palin, whose vocals are a perfect fit for Adagio’s music both past and present.  Adagio’s sound is evolving, incorporating a heavier guitar sound, screams, and death vocals, but with songwriting that is still Adagio without a doubt. Album production, handled by guitarist Stephan Forté and keyboardist Kevin Codfert, is simply excellent; the balance is perfect and drums come through sharp and crisp.

The first track ‘Vamphyri’ begins with a blood-curdling scream that makes you wonder if the band has totally switched over to black metal. But don’t worry – you’ll hear only an occasional scream or death vocal, done in a way that fits the songs and is not overused. Many of the songs have memorable melody lines, like favorites ‘Fear Circus’ and ‘The Fifth Ankh’, which I catch myself singing throughout the day. ‘Undead’ features a great beat and melody, a bit of death vocals, and a blazing keyboard solo. Another favorite is ‘Codex Oscura’ with yet another memorable melody and a slower part in the middle with softer singing and an expressive guitar solo.

With the combination of great melodies and a heavy sound, Adagio has retained their identity while having upped their game a notch. Definitely a release that should not be overlooked.
