Place Vendome - Streets Of Fire

Label: Frontiers
Format: CD
Released: 2009
Reviewed By: Mark Gromen
Rating: 5/10
The second collaboration between vocalist Michael Kiske (ex-Helloween), three members of Pink Cream 69 (including Dennis Ward) and Vanden Plas keyboardist Gunter Werno, on songs written by various craftsmen, including new Primal Fear guitarist Magnus Karlsson (‘My Guardian Angel’ ballad) and  a trio by Ronny Milianowicz (Saint Daemon drummer, ex-HammerFall, Ex-Sinergy).

As a Weenies’ fan, it’s difficult to listen to the Voice Of Keeper singing selections that vary between poppy, keyboard weighted down American glam (ala third tier bands like Rough Cutt or Autograph, minus anything as “energetic” as ‘Turn Up The Radio’), generic 80s rock soundtracks and the pabulum Queensryche have been spewing for the last decade (or more).

The one exception is the Michael McDonald/Doobie Brothers sounding ‘Valerie (The Truth Is In Your Eyes)’. Not enough options to break out of mid-tempo, although the opening ‘Streets Of Fire’ and ‘Believer’ are reasonably lively, in a Survivor ‘Eye Of The Tiger’ mode. Kiske completists only need apply.
