Receiving this DVD/CD set in the mail was akin to opening a present on Christmas Day. After carefully breaking the shrink wrap I popped the DVD in and was mesmerized for the next five hours. What we have here is simply put, an amazing Edguy performance from Sao Paulo Brazil in 2006 on the Rocket Ride tour (the accompanying two audio CDs feature the fourteen tracks from the DVD). The DVD also includes a great documentary that spans Edguys entire career, interviews and road high jinks as well as four promotional videos.

Watching this DVD makes me realize why I liked Edguy to begin with. Tons of energy and stage presence as well as superb showmanship and musical ability make this band very addicting to watch. The production is absolutely amazing and the video is very crisp and clear throughout.  Not only are there multiple camera angles and a crane camera that covers the entire audience, but a dolly camera that moves back and forth in the photo pit. These multiple angles are spliced together perfectly and add a real depth to the concert. The crowd goes absolutely ballistic and jump up and down throughout the entire show. The bands energy coupled with the crowd equals just absolute pandemonium.

The sound of this live recording is where Edguy really shines. The guitars are perfectly blended and not too high in the mix whereas some live CD’s suffer. Vocalist Tobias Sammet sounds great and really knows how to work a crowd. The rest of the band does a great job pumping up the audience with silly antics and just all around stellar musicianship.

Standout tracks include ‘Babylon’, ‘Lavatory Love Machine’, ‘Tears Of A Mandrake’, and my personal favorite ‘Vain Glory Opera’.

It was very difficult to find any fault with this product. My only vice is that maybe they did not make the best choice in ‘Catch Of The Century’ as an opening number. I believe that Edguy is best with a faster track coming out of the box. But truth be told it is a great view nonetheless. This is a must for all power metal fans new or old. And if you are not familiar with them, this is a great place to start.
