Hardline - Leaving The End Open

Label: Frontiers

Quick, who is the best undiscovered vocalist in Metal? My nomination continues to be Johnny Gioeli, who cut his teeth on the widely praised Hardline debut, but has since toiled in virtual obscurity (especially in North America) fronting German axe wielder Axel Rudi Pell (who has launched a string of vocalists in his 20+ year career).

Originally formed in the early 90s, with his brother and Journey legend Neil Schon paired on guitars, this marks Hardline’s third sporadic offering, Gioeli being the last man standing. Easy listening aka soft rock: serene and unadventurous, is the name of the game. Sadly, it doesn’t afford the American singer the chance to show his soulful/emotive side, so typically displayed in his “regular gig”. Only ‘Falling Free’ comes close. On opposite extremes are the two other rockers (ie. guitar development), ‘Give In To This Love’ and the 80s Sunset Strip (cowbell included) lite-rock of ‘Pieces Of The Puzzle’ versus ballad ‘In This Moment’, which is just Gioeli and piano. Consider it a solo record, stepping far afield of his rock persona.
