Another in the Nukies’ recent spate of multi-disc/multi-formatted live product (alongside dual discs and/or DVDs from Edguy and Death Angel), this is a pair of Hungarian orchestra accompanied Therion compositions and nearly two-hour visual memorial of the experience (plus 20-minute compilation of behind-the-scenes set-up, rehearsal and interview footage, as well as 15 multi-camera minutes from Dec. 2006, when Therion appeared on Bucharest TV with the local orchestra, an event that obviously was impetus for the main show). Actually Christofer Johnsson turns the table on the so-called “long hairs,” having the Swedes perform eight classical pieces, from diverse composers like Dvorak, Verdi, Mozart and Wagner (half of the eight).

Like Epica’s foray into the symphonic world (also on Nuclear Blast, come to think of it), apart from ‘Clavicula Nox’ the initial audio disc is reserved for the “unconventional” songs (an odd adjective NOT associated with Johnnson in this case) aka the classical stuff. However, there are times when Therion are not playing at all, just the symphony! The second, longer CD houses the Therion songs and a full orchestra, wild ride called ‘Grand Finale’.

The dual digi format is housed in cardboard box. Night and day contrast between the metalized second disc and predominately orchestral introduction, but there’s nothing like hearing ‘Blood Of Kings’ with a full choir! Creepy, old world pipe organ starts ‘Via Nocturna’. There’s also extensive (would you expect anything less from Therion?) liner notes from the mainman on why he selected the composers he did.

The booklet is all sepia tones and b&w photos. Given the nature of the project and the underground status of the band (to say nothing of the fact Therion issued “Live Gothic” a year ago, “Live In Midgard” in ‘02 and the massive four DVD/two CD career retrospective in between), Nuclear Blast has opted to make this an import-only experience. The gig took place in ’07 in a hockey arena (chairs on the floor), Therion in evening finery (tuxedos, vests and bowtie for Johnsson), the well behaved audience clapping between offerings, only letting loose (appropriately) at after the finale.

An acquired taste, but hasn’t Therion been, of late?
