Asphyx - Death…The Brutal Way

Label: Ibex Moon
Format: CD
Released: 2009
Reviewed By: Mark Gromen
Rating: 7/10

No real intro, ‘Scorbutics’ jumps from the speakers like an errand Motorhead leftover, Martin van Drunen sounding like a hoarse Lemmy (redundant?), but as the track progresses, and particularly parts of the next two (a belabored ‘The Herald’ and appropriately sluggish ‘Bloodswamp’) Asphyx go for a slower, groove oriented grind. Not a vintage death metal noise (‘Crush The Cenotaph’ this isn’t), especially with a new-found (?) reliance on melody and doomy passages.

Few balls out, end-to-end riffers. After the agonizing death throes to end ‘Asphyx (They Died As They Marched)’, a more conventional ‘Eisenbahnmorser’ complete with cannon fire, revs things up. Just in time for the piano begun (kid you not!) ‘Black Hole Storm’, that quickly gets down to business (Killing is it’s business…like a tank patiently rolling across your pulsating body). ‘Riflegun Redeemer’ keeps the accelerator depressed, while the closing ‘The Saw, The Torture, The Pain’ (great title!), shortest track on the disc (3:10), is a grinding, mid-tempo instrumental.

Overseas edition (on Century Media) comes with a DVD of their ’07 Party San appearance.
