Royal Jester – Night Is Young

Debut from a Swedish power metal outfit formed less than two years ago. Owing a debt to Dragonforce, not only in the speed department, but the ZP Theart highs and particularly the multi-voiced ‘ta-da’ style ending, the one-two punch of ‘Night Is Young’ and ‘Wings Of Tomorrow’ is as synchronized as the double bass drummer’s feet. But it’s not all about being a Dragon-clone.

‘If You Were Mine’, ‘Enter The Mist’, ‘Born Again’ and the band’s signature track chug along like Deutsche Bahn, although the German railway dispensed with the clickety-clack, piston driven steam engines ages ago. While ‘The New Order’ bounces on a reworked Poison melody (there IS that glam wave sweeping through their homeland these days), it turns to more Teutonic stylings soon after. On the other side of the aisle, there’s ‘Jester Madness’, an almost poppy number and ‘Vile Smile’ adopts an Italian feel, slowed to mid-tempo neo-classical, a strange departure from the other inclusions.

Not re-inventing the wheel, but Royal Jester can have a successful career overseas, meaning it’s highly unlikely they’ll ever tour here.
