Tankard - Open All Night Reloaded

Updating the vintage VHS copy of the ’90 East Berlin concert, our favorite German beer thrashers have augmented that classic show with an eleven-song performance from the Rock Hard festival in ’07, as well as a trio of promotional videos since ’06 (‘The Beauty And The Beast’, ‘Forza SGE’ and ‘Stay Thirsty!’) and personal tour archives/goof-offs from around the globe, including Russia, South America and non-Teutonic European locales. Sadly, there’s no commentary, nor liner notes to expand upon the newest inclusions, or expound, even retrospectively on the old concert. At least the two concerts, 17 years apart, only duplicate three songs, essential as they might be (‘Zombie Attack’, ‘Chemical Invasion’ and ‘Empty Tankard’, which closes both nights).

Funny to look at the old school graphics, no cordless mics and an almost svelte Andreas "Gerre" Geremia stalking the stage: twirling, somersaulting, air guitar and giving his all. Shows HOW much this guy must drink, to have developed SUCH a beer gut, given the physical demands of his show. Even back then, he was in sweat pants! The old show suffers many of the same ills of countless Noise era videos, cameramen who had no idea how to film live metal (other than from afar). Or maybe it was the editors (if any), who on left in blurry shots, back of heads or focused other musicians during guitar solos. By contrast, the ’07 show is letterboxed and gives more of a true live vibe. The extra bits, all manager filmed camcorder footage, could be subtitled Drunk, Passed Out And Hung-over, Worldwide. Unlike the initial concert film, this half hour collection of clips (Gerre’s various attempts at stage diving, hanging w/ Korpiklaani in Finland, etc.) is sadly devoid of subtitles, so only German speakers will get the best jokes.
