Myrath - Desert Call

Label: Nightmare
Format: CD download
Released: 2010
Reviewed By: Mark Gromen
Rating: 7 /10

Opting for the Kamelot inspired school of prog-power metal (particularly the opening ‘Forever And A Day’), Myrath hail from the unlikely locale of Tunisia. As such, it’s amazing they’re so up-to-date with metallic styles/happenings. Otherworldly (I’d say Middle Eastern, but given the homeland, that wouldn’t be accurate) melodies envelop the eleven tracks on this, their third album (albeit the Nightmare debut).

Apart from the synth laden final third, the 10:43 ‘Silent Cries’ plays the prog card fairly straight, bordering on a ballad. Speaking of ballads, ‘Memories’ (not the Barbara Streisand tune) is a full-blown acoustic/synth slowdown (‘Shockwave’ also ends with acoustic guitar/piano, nearly a cappella vocals). ‘Ironic Destiny’ gets things moving again, probably the most aggressive number overall, including flurries of modern staccato riffing. A galloping ‘No Turning Back’ continues the emphasis on six-strings, fleet fingering until the ethnic drumming conclusion.

Catchy, interesting "introduction" to most of the world.
