Despite the goofy troll & goat-eared publicity photos that have accompanied the current batch of ads, these Finns are serious, generally. True, some of the melodies sound like an evil calliope from some B-grade horror film, or the soundtrack to a child’s cartoon.

The abruptly ending ‘I Trädens Sång’ is off kilter calliope, as is the orchestral backed ‘Mot Skuggornas Värld’, whilst the beerhall sing-along ‘Under Bergets Rot’ is the soundtrack to an out-of-control cartoon chase sequence. ‘Tiden Utan Tid’ opens as multi-voiced chant, prior to the crash of guitars and more deathly vocalizations that characterize the proper song (whose rhythm owes a bit to Disney's Sorcerer's Apprentice). After an exaggerated intro ‘Solsagan’ marries symphonic backing to a lively humppa beat and near death metal vocal delivery. That delivery is in old Swedish, exclusively. What appears to be the Finnish equivalent of banjo is prevalent throughout ‘Galgasång’, an otherwise acoustic, near a cappella tune. Glorious horrendous three-way accident where a bus carrying a symphony collided with Finnish countrymen Finntroll and a death metal outfit, simultaneously. Disc ends with 7:00 ‘Dråp’, a mish-mash of what’s come before.
