Détente - Decline

Does anyone under the age of 25 even know what Détente means these days? Short-lived 80s politically charged thrash/crossover act fronted by the late Dawn Crosby was unique for having a screeching female vocalist (two decades before Arch Enemy’s Angela Gossow) and a lyrical rant more akin to 70s fight-the-system punk. Crosby went on to gain slightly more fame with Fear Of God (particularly the mesmerizing, ’91 Warner debut, "Within The Veil". If you haven’t heard it, check it out!) before dying all too early, while her original project languished in the history books until “Recognize No Authority” was re-issued and the drummer/bassist resurrected the moniker.

This is the first "post-reunion" studio effort, having garnered a new fem-thrasher (not much of a novelty, some 25 years after Crosby and Sabina ‘Holy Moses’ Claussen founded the role), managing just 28 minutes, over eight tracks. Talk about lack of productivity, at that rate it will be 2015 before even a follow-up Ep! Obviously the reunion of so many contemporaries played on their psyches, but most of what made Détente special (time, context, lyrical and front woman uniqueness) are now passé, as is the thrash/death metal hybrid herein. Shame. Some might enjoy ‘Kill Rush’ regarding the right-wing radio commentator and the socially responsible slant of ‘Predator’ and ‘This Is Not Freedom’, but too little (literally!) too late.
