First studio album in 13 years, some things really do get better with age: witness the bluesy boogie of Y&T. While it’s difficult to forgive/forget the attempted late 80s jump on the Sunset Strip glam-metal bandwagon (come on, you’re from Frisco), they redefined themselves as a back catalog touring outfit, thanks in large part to interest from the European festival crowd. The title infers scorching riffs, which is sort of misleading, but there are some decent uptempo numbers and this might just be the strongest platter since "Meanstreak". Judging from ‘Gonna Go Blind’ and a similar masturbatory line in ‘Hot Shot’, apparently guitar isn’t the only thing Dave Meniketti plays with all day! Something is firmly planted in cheek with that latter set of lyrics.

After a corny, sideshow barker intro, there are thirteen proper songs, split amongst the standard Y&T styles: barroom boogie, bluesy ballads and catchy hard rock. Standouts include the rousing ‘On With The Show’ opener, ‘I’m Coming Home’, the unrequited love song ‘If You Want Me’, the juvenile, yet sure to bring a smile to your face ‘Hot Shot’ and revving ‘Blind Patriot’. For some reason ‘Don’t Bring Me Down’ makes passing lyrical and musical references to The Who’s ‘Baba O’Riley’ and ‘Who Are You’. ‘One Life' should have been the closing number (over ‘Losing My Mind’), but that's a minor complaint.

Check out how these old dogs do it!
