Unitopia – Artificial

Label: InsideOut
Format: CD download
Released: 2010

Australia's supposedly leading prog-rock entity return with their third album, a ten-track concept surrounding artificial intelligence. Apparently prog-rock Down Under means lame! This is jazzy, watered down Dream Theater worship: rock/metal for (misguided) people who think the likes of Billy Joel or Phil Collins are rock.

Lest the listeners might miss the point, ‘Nothing Lasts Forever’, a rewritten Beatles track, references "the boys from Liverpool" and "fool on the hill". Penning a paean to your heroes is one thing (Lord knows I’ve praised many of Sweden’s finest heartfelt imitators, like Portrait, Wolf, Bullet, etc.), but when compelled to elaborate (as if we’ll miss the point), it’s a bit like a comedian having explain a joke.

The European edition will be a digi-pak with a trio of bonus tracks (15:28 more music!), housed on a separate disc, going under the title Relative World. Don’t know where they live, but certainly don’t want to be their neighbor.
