Children Of Bodom- Relentlessly Reckless Forever

Label: Spinefarm/Universal

Basically nine new tracks, although there are a ton of extras on a second disc, including ads for Alexi Laiho’s upcoming guitar-playing DVD, two live Bloodstock Festival tracks (‘Every Time I Die’ and ‘Angels Don’t Kill’) and a video/making of for the ‘Was It Worth It?’ single. Given the odd album title, this new material is definitely not reckless (Janne Warman’s keyboards prominently displayed), relentless (OK, the screaming ‘Shovel Knockout’ and a short, frenetic closer, ‘North Pole Throwdown’ are pretty vicious), nor forever (the whole disc lasts just 36 minutes!).

What we have is a more musically mature outing, although Laiho’s raspy, sinister, expletive riddled (even moreso) vo-kills tend towards the modulated, industrial variety. I surmise this is an attempt to heavy his voice up, to compete with the modern American market. Coupled with Ozzy overtones, circa "The Ultimate Sin", ‘Ugly’ sounds as if it’s a re-working of a Sinergy (the band Laiho started with then girlfriend/frontwoman Kim Goss) tune intended for their written-but-never-released fourth album ("Sins Of The Past"). Elsewhere, ‘Roundtrip To Hell And Back’ is so smooth, it feels like a ballad and the single ‘Was It Worth It?’ features some of that patented Laiho-Warman interplay.

COB 4 ever!
