Cage - The Rise To Power

San Diego outfit’s initial foray into the home DVD market is a dual disc affair, separated between the 2009 ProgPower USA performance on disc 1 and a ten song compilation of 07-08 German and Mexican festivals on the bonus disc, alongside some off-stage shenanigans (10 minute European travelogue/photo gallery, 16 minutes behind-the-scenes, fan interactions from several trips south of the border) and a teaser for the upcoming "Symphony Of Steel" CD (zombie photos video for ‘War Of The Undead’).

Since those dates, the bassist and guitarist have been replaced, so this serves to close the chapter on Cage Mk II (a new DVD, looking at the early years, with original guitarist Eric Horton and drummer Damien Arletto threatens to be out soon). Especially on the 2nd disc, the song selection covers their 13 year recording career, albeit just ‘Shoot To Kill’ and ‘Final Solution’ from the initial pair of releases. Hey Sean, how about including ‘Dancing Around the Fire’ on the next tour? Sean is mainman/singer Sean Peck, possessor of killer high end pipes. Each of the four concerts is shot with multiple cameras, although the Atlanta gig is the cream-of-the crop, visually (Blu-ray, hi-def version available shortly). It’s a rapid cut/edited piece that also features double-exposures, fades and visual overlays. In attendance at said gig, they certainly leveled Center Stage, but the audience was nowhere near as boisterous as the audio would imply (a little post-production magic!). Would be nice if disc #2 also had a "Play All" button, but each sequence returns to the main menu at the conclusion of that gig’s segment. The volume and sound quality fluctuates from one stage to the next. The Mexicali Metalfest 2 date, outdoors in the cold, is the roughest. Thankfully, just ‘Wings Of Destruction’ is offered up there. Then again, this is a DIY project by an unsigned band, so it’s not going to be comparable to a more moneyed release.
