Acephalix - Interminable Night

On first listen, you might do well to wonder, "Have Entombed finally returned to Left Hand Path? Or is this a re-release of one those eponymous Gothenberg Swedes finally seeing the light?" Which is exactly along the lines of what I thought upon my first listen to Acephalix’s "Interminable Night". These American upstarts have gotten all Skogsberg on our assets.

"Interminable Night" even begins as an Entombed album would begin with a fuzzy squeal of feedback leading into the opening track, ‘Christhole’. The only thing that truly distinguishes Acephalix from being almost totally Entombed-ed is the vocals, which sound like they were recorded in a dank crypt somewhere. All other differences creep in upon repeated listens. By the third listen, which ain’t hard to do since the album clocks in at roughly under a half hour, the Skogsberg SwedeThang luster disappears under the fuzzed up guitars. In fact, Acephalix plays it pretty loose and hard. There is a pretty excellent grooviness to "Interminable Night". I would try to pick out some highlights but most of the songs, like much of the Entombed / Dismember formula, sound alike (the inadvertent bane of death metal, proving many of our parents right). The songs are awash in that fuzzed out distortion and there is little in the way of melodic rhythms going on – which is not a band thing for this style.

Bottom line, you've probably heard this before but don’t hold that against Acephalix. I imagine that these guys probably put on a really good show and we got support our home grown death metal. In fact, I quite dig this album despite its homogeneity of sound. Sometimes you just got have something that grooves darkly. Best Tracks: ‘Christhole’, ‘Rebirth Into Perversion’, and‘Interminable Night’.
