Suicidal Angels – Divide And Conquer

So Greece has more talent in their country aside from Firewind. I’m somewhat familiar with the Angels and reviewed an album or two for the Asylum and find em one of the better acts (along with Havok and Evile) from the next younger generation of 80s trained thrashers. Reason one, and this applies to the other two bands, is that like with Suicidal you hear the Slayer, Kreator, Overkill, Exodus influences, and it obvious (which is fine) in tracks like ‘Seed Of Evil’. But in this arrangement the speed takes a back seat to a great tight heavy hitting rhythm, crunchy riff and tasty solo that’s’ as thrashable as say the title track to “Divide And Conquer” which starts so nicely like an older 80s Slayer tune. Number two, the vocals are not screamed or yelled, Suicidal is more so spoken like Araya, or even like how Vio-Lence did things. And, the music has more melody and dynamics, take for instance the beginning to ‘Control The Twisted Mind’, very Forbidden-esque. The Angels learned from the godfathers well and know how to take their time in arrangement and delivery. A little more personality in the vocal during mid paced pounder ‘In the Grave’ works and the change picking up speed is a swift kick to the face. ‘Pit Of snakes’ has a dirtier sounding guitar, and in parts how ‘Kneel To The Gun’ chugs along feels like it has a dose of some thrash death metal from pioneers like Death, Sepultura, or Morbid Angel.

A solid presentation from Suicidal Angels, musically, visually with the band’s image, and album artwork by Ed Repka who has done covers for Megadeth, Death, Sanctuary plus many others.
