Mindmaze – Back from the Edge

Label: Inner Wound Recordings
Format: CD download
Released: 2014

Rating: 9/ 10

Always refreshing to review a US-based band, and Mindmaze fits the bill, hailing from my neighboring state of Pennsylvania. ‘Back from the Edge’ is the bands’ second studio release and includes a total of 8 tracks. The three main band members tackle vocals, guitars, and drums while Symphony X bassist Mike Lepond provides the bass component. Several tracks feature guest appearances from other musicians.

The album begins with the chugging and solid title track “Back from the Edge”, which has memorable vocal lines in the chorus, great drum work, and guitar harmonies throughout. Next, “Through the Open Door” delivers more strong vocals and varying rhythms to keep things interesting. Ten minute track “The Machine Stops” truly showcases the talents of each musician, including guest guitarist Matt Johnsen (Pharaoh), with superior song-writing as a foundation. “Onward” closes out the album with some great guitar solos and an anthemic feel.

In the over-saturated genre of female-fronted metal, Mindmaze certainly has not only the musical talent, but the requisite song-writing skills, to be successful and rise to the top.
