Hey, what was the name of the villain in the first Conan feature film? The correct answer is Thulsa Doom. Coincidence? I think not.

The Doom Metal trio named after Robert E. Howard's most-beloved character have achieved new depths of downward tuning. The guitarist and bassist of Conan must have bridge cables on the necks of their guitars and basses, and fingers the size of Arnold Schwarzenegger's biceps to get these sounds. It's impressive and mostly well-used on the six tracks that make up 2016's full-length, "Revengeance". They sport no electronics, but the rattling boom of their sound still sometimes evokes an Industrial feel, as of heavy machinery breaking the crust of the earth and drilling deep into the black and molten red below.

The chest-rattling mecha-riffs work marvelously on the opening tracks, ‘Throne of Fire’ and ‘Thunderhoof’, but expose the Achilles' Heel of this kind of sound in the third track, ‘Wrath Gauntlet’, which I'll choose to believe is based on the greatest arcade console video games of all time. The repetitive riffage of the first half of its almost 9 minutes feels like an endless pounding by club-wielding grunts. Warrior needs food badly. The final three tracks repeat the cycle, with the strong title track getting somehow even heavier than the previous three songs, then closing out with another solid track in "Every Man is an Enemy" and a somewhat overlong, OK-but-a-little-tedious piece.

For vocals, Conan features two voices - - both apparently belonging to guitarist, Jon Davis shouting in atonal harmony over the mudslide of the instruments, somewhat reminiscent of early Baroness. No prominent growls, no screeches, no clear voices. It works, but I can't help wondering just how much a world-class vocalist could improve upon the good thing they have going here.

Distinctive, lava-sludgy, and attention-holding (except when it's not). Conan's "Revengeance" is a must for Doom Metal fans. The perfect musical accompaniment to crush your enemies, see them driven before, and hear the lamentations of their women.
