Cauldron – In Ruin

Label: The End Records

Include Cauldron with the current resurgence of traditional 80s Heavy Metal from the underground inspired by the likes of Omen, Manilla Road, Nasty Savage, and Hallows Eve, and the NWOBHM like Angel Witch and Diamond Head, where it was a mix of Iron Maiden/Judas Priest traditional with speed metal. Lead off track to their fourth album, ‘No Return/ In Ruin’, sees these Canadians proudly wear these influences on their sleeves, carrying the flag for a classic sound into the present. ‘Empress’ has a passive feel but picks up the pace a tad for the solo section and carries over for the delivery to ‘Burning At Both Ends’, where Jason Decay brings a little more emotion to his vocals.

‘Hold Your Fire’ hits with a simplistic yet solid arrangement, complimenting backing vocals, and solo. Tempo is sped up a little more for ‘Santa Mira’ with some very early Iron Maiden influenced leads. ‘Corridors of Dust’ again embraces a straight forward romp to bass and Jurassic- riff/drum, yet the leads are clean. The acoustic and clean guitars for instrumental ‘Delusive Serenade’ have a Bathory feel providing dynamics. More of that imperfect 80s sounding guitar riffing closes the album with an ‘Outrance’.

Cauldron, with Skull Fist, Enforcer, Striker, Steelwing, and Wolf are all bringing it back to the roots of heavy metal from the 70s and 80s.
