As different as a band can be these days, with all the sub genres out there that incorporate multiple sub genres, Exmortus try to, and succeed on some level, to do the same. Let me explain…first track ‘Speed of the Strike’ mostly based on an Amon Amarth melodic thrash/death metal aesthetic because of the blackened/deathy voice and a beat that chugs along, but with moments of European Power Metal in the change and twin leads. ‘Relentless’ is in the same vein, crosses over into Ensiferum territory, but goes more traditional metal sound and direction without the vocal for the solo section with all the shredding and twin harmonizing. Like a sped up more aggressive Maiden or Priest. Feels like a cross between American speed metal (Vicious Rumors, Impellitteri) and Children of Bodom. Same goes for ‘For The Horde’, lots and lots of lead work and guitar acrobatics. A sure shred fest.

‘Let Us Roam’ combines a great balance between a gallop and punchy rhythm for the verses and chorus, there is so much great riffing and lead work going on, these guys could be even better with a less harsh voice, more singing,. ‘Black Sails’ builds momentum for a minute before hitting a mid pace, while ‘Hymn Of Hate’ brings back the faster beat with melodic guitar leads. Speaking of leads, ‘Death To Tyrants’ gets off to a nice start with guitars and flows with a strong crunch and punch. But again, think it would be even better with a voice that was singing without the harsh deathy gruffness. Musically, these guys have it, but vocally needs improvement. Maybe use the wicked voice sparingly, and make the focus be on a more traditional Dickinson/Halford/Dio/Ozzy delivery.
