Full disclosure: the "Versus" album is my first exposure to PG Lost, even though it's their fifth studio album release. They've apparently utilized vocals in the past, but have chosen to go full instrumental on this album, with intertwining guitars and synths filling the sky. The result is a dreamy, lush, cloud-like, big-screen sound, crafted in the musical heritage of Rainbow, John Carpenter, Tangerine Dream, Hum, Metallica's classic-era slower tempo stuff, Two Steps From Hell, New Keepers of the Water Tower, video game scores, maybe some of Roddy Bottom's and Jim Martin's early Faith No More work, and definitely some of The Album Leaf. In fact, as much as I dig TAL's early material, PG Lost have achieved on this album what I'd always hoped The Album Leaf would become.

After swimming through the waters of "Versus", I'm eager to take a dip in their previous stuff. This album is a smooth sail of ideas that's hard to dislike. While I'm a big fan of instrumental music, the broad, gorgeously-depicted seascapes sometimes feel like they could benefit from a focal point, some kind of lead - - something to latch onto. The casual listener will nod in vague approval, but never latch on (not that I get the sense PG Lost cares much for the "casual listener"). Don't let this dissuade you from checking this out, though. I dropped the New Keepers of the Water Tower name earlier; there is a strong correlation between this release and their excellent "Infernal Machine" machine album, which was also fully devoid of vocals.

There are lots of great moments and discoveries to cite on "Versus." I probably need to point to the climactic moments of ‘Deserter’ and ‘Along the Edges’ as some of the best. I used a lot of water metaphors in my review, because that speaks a lot to the feel of the music, not because of any direct callout from PG Lost in the songs. Not so much roaring tides or rapids or big, crashing waves; more of a drifting, directed maritime journey in an interesting place. Come on board and enjoy the trip.
