In the blackened thrash metal game since 1998 (and one of the first) with their debut album, original members Jensen (guitar, The Haunted), Rikard Rimfält (guitar, Seance) and Sharlee D’Angelo (bass, Arch Enemy), now joined by new additions Angus Norder on vocals and drummer Chris Barkensjo for their 6th album. Like previous ones, as you can hear from the opening three songs “In His Infernal Majesty's Service” maintains their formula of that black/death metal vocal with thrashy riffs and rhythms – similarly to forefathers Sodom and Dark Angel, and at times the like-minded Arch Enemy (who Sharlee is also still a member of).

Over the course of these thirteen tracks the music’s delivery is fast and furious with an evil tonality to both riffery and lyrical annunciation. See ‘The Burning Of Sodom’ and black metal riff based ‘Gilded Fang’. Obviously Witchery influenced this sound for later bands like Skeletonwitch and Toxic Holocaust. By the fourth tune ‘Nosferatu’, the tempo slows down (also see ‘In Warm Blood’), switching the focus to attention to rhythm and melody, balancing out the listening experience with the sheer speed and raw production. The keyboard opening to ‘Escape From Dunwich Valley’ is welcomed and adds dynamics amongst the aggression. Same with the crunch and punch to headbanger ‘Feed The Gun’ – I always love these type of Witchery tunes. ‘Eye For An Eye’ sees another of the Witch’s arrangement ideas-combining the death vocal with moments of almost a whisper.

Great to have the Witch back. I hope with this album they will find more time to promote and tour. Would love to see them in the USA! Raise the metal horns in the W!
