Opening title track, ‘Speranza’, and ‘The Brotherhood’ include all the sounds an Angra fan would want from the Brazilian culture’s influence in the use of outside instruments and organic new age sounds (‘Indigo’), to bright upbeat melodies and harmonies. All these qualities are what made Angra, and now Almah, stand out amongst the European style Power Metal pack in the 90s till today. The one thing that does separate Almah from Angra is the use or more modern rhythmic rhythms (‘Final Warning’) and prog changes on a song like ‘Innocence’ and ‘Pleased To Meet You’. Here Almah are more influenced by bands like Vanishing Point, Evergrey, and Vanden Plas. And yes… the Helloween/Edguy/Stratovarius aesthetic does show up still is a song like ‘Higher’ which is pure Euro power metal, and it is well done.
In a sense lacking their own identity given their pedigree is logical, still, it’s strong well-constructed and arranged Brazilian influenced power/prog metal not played by many or on this level.
