Oddland – Origin

Oddland aren't actually very odd. In fact, they're an easy fit on contemporary hard rock radio. With no offense intended to the rhythm section, the two aural spotlights are mostly trained on the lead vocals and lead guitars. The latter of which keeps busy and interesting all throughout the material. The best licks aren't just saved up for the designated solo sections, they can be heard all over.

On vocals, Sakari Ojanen's baritone recalls Grunge and Nu-Metal signing styles. It also sounds like he's singing with a focus on all of the panties he expects his crooning to drop. Kind of like Corey Taylor's Stone Sour delivery. Or kind of like Scott Stapp from Creed - - just not awful. In fact, Ojanen's come-hither seductions aside, his voice is actually pretty likable, and well-suited to Oddland's down-tuned melodic Djenting. So what you get is a lot of busy, interesting guitar and drum interplay, with sustained vocal notes over the top, like a slick Maserati frame over a complex, powerful engine. Standout tracks are the two closers: ‘Faraway’ and ‘Will’. ‘Thanatos’ is pretty good a representative of Oddland too.
