Admittedly, I started this quest, er, album, with low expectations, but Legendry’s “The Wizard in the High Tower” quickly dismissed any uncertainties. With lyrics straight out of your last D&D campaign, and music from various shelves of your record collection, you’ll find that you’ve had a multitude of experiences by the end, that you’ll have grown, and perhaps even. . . . gained a new level. . . of musical appreciation.
Anyway. They switch musical genres with mastery and ease, with a few natural 20 rolls in each venture (OK, I’ll stop with the D&D jokes).

The first song, “The Bard’s Tale,” evoking the name of one of the first computer RPGs, is a Renfaire acoustic folksy piece, which more than anything else, evokes Toad the Wet Sprocket.
Track 2, “Vindicator,” jumps in with a killer tribute to pre-2112 Rush.
Track 3, the title cut, “The Wizard and the Tower Keep,” is an incredible blend of Jake E. Lee-era Ozzy and King Crimson, with an uptempo solo section that recalls Jane’s Addiction’s “Three Days.”
Track 4, “The Lost Road,” gets a bit more Sabbathy with some Doom touches.
5: “Sorcery’s Bane” is a bit of a Thin Lizzy vibe.
“Behind the Summoner’s Seal” at track 6 kicks in the Speed Metal, in the tradition of “Walls of Jericho” Helloween and early stuff from the Thrash Big 4.
The final song, “Earthwarrior,” returns to the Hard-Rocking 70s Prog vibe, and a nice coda that recalls “The Bard’s Tale.”
Most of the 7 songs are pretty long, so “The Wizard and the Tower Keep” qualifies as a full-length record. Throughout, there are appearance from non-traditional instruments, like violin, mandolin, and Hammond organ. The production is kind of awful; it sounds pretty much like “Push play and record on the tape deck in the garage,” but that doesn’t detract from the well-written songs. Legendry made their Saving Throw vs. Poor Sound Quality (sorry, sorry). This is a good, diverse Metal record that spans years and genres, and should please a wide array of audiences.
