Vocalist/guitarist Pete Shoulder’s soulfully powerful voice is immediately reminiscent of Chris Cornell - - I promise I won’t be the only person to make that comparison - - but his singing also sometimes evokes the best of Paul Rodgers and Eric Clapton. Silverthorne are a trio whose sound hearkens most to the larger Hard Rock/Metal rosters of Soundgarden, Led Zeppelin, Foo Fighters, Cream, and Bad Company. The final track is clearly in the tradition of the Zeppelin “Presence” classic, “Achilles Last Stand.” The drums are powerfully employed, creatively accentuated, and well-recorded, but with enough echo and chamber to sound like they were mic’ed in a bathroom (a nice one, not like at a Motel 6).
The five songs on “Tear the Sky Wide Open” are kept concise and tight, 5-and-a-half minutes and under, though with a driving live feel. The highlight is the opening and title track, which earns its sticking place in your head, by being catchy and extremely well-composed around a monster riff and a colossal chorus - - it’s not just some empty Pop fucking earworm. “Movin” is the same kind of catchy hook, but in more of a bar-band-clap-along way.
Get in on Silverthorne now, so you can impress people in the future by saying you were into them way back in 2020.
