Sometimes a diner cheeseburger is delicious. Nothing fancy, no surprises, no culinary school training in the kitchen, no revolutionary creativity, no real nutritional value - - just something you’ve had countless times before, but well--prepared, greasy, and exactly right.
That’s the Onslaught experience.

Heavy as shit #Thrash Metal fried up perfectly to order and served with greasy fries. Shades of Flotsam and Jetsam, Megadeth, Helstar, Slayer, Anthrax, Exodus, Metallica, Testament, Anthrax, Annihilator. Don’t forget that Onslaught formed in the UK way back in 1983, so they were there for the beginnings of Thrash and Crossover. They’ve been cooking these burgers for decades, they know what they’re doing. On “Generation Antichrist,” their seventh release, they chug, curse, shred, and mosh like frizzy-haired teenagers.
This album isn’t about the innovation or even necessarily the riffs, it’s just about the aggression and the headbanging. They want to piss you off, push your buttons, and get you crowdsurfing. With lyrics like “Religion takes it up the ass, it’s Jesus fucking Christ” - - they’re not trying to impress your parl-clutching grandmother. Their crosshairs frequently focus on organized religion, especially targeting this subject in the killer Hanneman-esque title track and the powerful lead single, “Religiousuicide.”
The best element of the record is the vocals. Newcomer Dave Garnett brings the perfect levels of anger, sneer, melody, and shout, and the backing vocals are distinctive and strong - - they’re what makes “Addicted to the Smell of Death” the best song on the record. The backing vocals in the chorus also makes “Empires Fall” a standout.
Nothing surprising, nothing shocking, nothing new here, just a tasty, tasty cheeseburger. No Thrash fan will regret this addition to their playlists. Recommended.
