Troops of Doom - The Absence Of Light - EP

Label: Nuclear Blast/Blood Blast
Format: Download
Released: 2021

Rating: 8/10

Vicious, brutal, and dangerous. The edge and fire are all over the four songs of this EP. The band hails from Brazil; guitarist Jairo “Tormentor” Guedz has some history as a founding member of Sepultura. You can hear echoes of early Sepultura, 21st-century Slayer, Kreator, and others who’ve scouted the borderlands between Thrash, Death, and Black Metals. And just when you’re thinking, “hey, this sounds a bit like Possessed,” Jeff Becerra himself (of Possessed) shows up as guest vocalist.

Of the six songs, one is an anarchic, punkish Sepultura cover, and two others are alternate demo versions of the first two tracks. But the first three tracks are ferocious roars, with blood and viscera dripping from their jaws. These are based on Thomas Hobbes’ “Leviathan” - - so watch out for that imagery as you listen.
1. Introduction – The Absence Of Light
2. Act I – The Devil’s Tail
3. Act II – The Monarch feat. Jeff Becerra (Possessed)
Bonus Tracks:
4. Antichrist (Sepultura Cover)
5. The Devil’s Tail (Demo Version)
6. The Monarch (Demo Version)
If “The Absence of Light” is a precursor to a 2022 full-length release, then this is a portent of great things to come.
