Symphonic Metal of the highest order. Haters may decry comparisons to Nightwish and their splinter projects, along with bands like Visions of Atlantis, Eleine, Dimmu Borgir, Two Steps From Hell, Exit Eden, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Amy Lee/Evanescence, and other acts who’ve incorporated symphonic elements, but don’t let them deter you. This band is no copycat or also-ran. Fortis Ventus’s 2022 “Vertalia” album is a triumph.

Drawing as much from the acts mentioned above as film composers John Williams, Horner, James Horner, and Hans Zimmer, they serve up epic tunes of breathtaking grandeur and beauty. The cinematic scope of each tune feels right at home for those of us raised in the generations where Heavy Metal and blockbuster films were at least as influential as our actual parents.
The album is a mountain range of high points, but its highest peak is the thrilling 10-minute epic, “Unveiling Path.” The song is a full-on adventure of movements and excitement. Grade A song composition, resulting in a glorious listening experience.
Fortis Ventus don’t skimp on either element of their Symphonic Metal, but it’s certainly more of the former than the latter. The orchestral parts are wonderfully produced. The mix and all of the instruments hit the stratosphere. There aren’t any face-melting guitar solos, no mosh parts, and all of the vocals are clean. Other than a guest appearance from male singer Dee Theorodou, all of the vox are covered by Nancy Mos’s captivating, operatic soprano. She’s also a primary songwriter, and so is the true heart of this project.
Standing ovation for “Veritalia.”
